Brian Absher: President, Timber Specialist
Brian has broad experience in the field of forestry and timber marketing. His career spans over 16 years with public and private timber companies including Weyerhaeuser, Champion International, International Paper, TimberStar, and Rayonier. He has held forest management positions on over 3.7 million acres of timberland located in 10 southern states and also Washington and New York. The primary focus of Absher’s management experience has been in timber marketing. Additionally, he has been a sawmill procurement manager and operated a pole and piling facility. His many industry relationships and connections with mills enable UTS to maximize cash flow through timber harvesting. He has developed and implemented techniques and processes that maximize efficiencies and cost effectiveness for marketing, merchandizing and harvesting timber.
In addition to the marketing of timber, Brian has managed log exports to Asia, including China and Turkey. His export experience includes the management of logging operations, shipping, merchandizing and credit structure. He has also been involved with bioenergy supply chain management.
Brian holds a Bachelor of Science in Forest Management from North Carolina State University. He is a member of the Louisiana Forestry Association and a North Carolina Registered Forester. He has received multiple awards for operational excellence.
Jeff Kellam: Land Specialist
Jeff has an extensive background in forestry. For over 15 years, he has managed timberland properties and harvested over $250,000,000 in timber. He constantly searches for quality properties that will yield immediate income from timber sales. Jeff also has expertise in real estate acquisition, including evaluating and purchasing of timber properties. He has purchased and sold over 110,000 acres of timberland.
He has cultivated numerous industry relationships and conducted transactions with International Paper, Weyerhaeuser, Plum Creek and most of the large Timberland Management Investment Organizations (TIMOs). He constantly monitors and visits timber sites across the South.
Jeff holds a B.S. degree in Forestry from Stephen F. Austin and several industry designations that include Registered Forester, Certified Tree Farm Inspector and Certified ISO 14000/SFI. In addition, he is a member of the Texas Real Estate Commission.
Dave Henderson: Licensed Real Estate Broker
Dave has spent a career in real estate investment, multi-family development, student housing and timberland investment. His real estate experience includes debt placement analysis, property acquisition and sale analysis in association with over $750 million in real estate assets developed, acquired or sold.
Dave’s timberland experience includes the acquisition underwriting, pre-purchase due diligence, negotiation for, and management of over 150,000 acres of timberland. In managing these properties, he coordinated activities with the forester for timber harvesting, reforestation, and property maintenance, as well as monitoring cash flow from operations in successful efforts to maximize asset values.
Dave holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Brigham Young University and an MBA from the University of North Texas. His civic involvement includes being a Leadership Longview Alumni, former Chairman of the Board and board member at The Crisman School and currently serving as a Junior Achievement volunteer teacher of high school seniors at Longview High School.
Paul Frederick: Southwest Operations Leader
Paul received his degree in Forestry Business from Louisiana Tech University in 1995. He spent 2 years in technical roles, becoming proficient in various aspects of forestry, especially in timber estimation and valuation. He then spent 8 years with the same company in procurement. This included 6 years buying stumpage for solid wood products mills on the open market and 2 years managing gatewood for a pulp and paper complex.
After a long hiatus from the forest industry, which included seminary study and commercial fishing, the opportunity to manage timberland with Universal Timber Services presented itself. He currently resides in DeRidder, Louisiana where he manages land for UTS, specializing in harvesting and marketing of wood products. He is a master logger in Louisiana and member of the Louisiana Forestry Association.
Mike Palmer: Forester
Mike and his wife, Sherry, reside in Kingwood, Texas. Mike has been an avid hunter and fisherman all his life. This love of the outdoors led him to pursue a degree in forestry from the University of Georgia. He is a registered forester in a number of southern states.
Mike retired after 37 years with a major industrial paper company. During those years, he and his family have lived and worked in most of the southern states. While working with the paper company he held a variety of positions – forest management, fiber procurement and human relations management development. In the last 23 years he worked in land transactions and land sales. He also served as the General Agricultural Manager for their 82,000 acre farm operation in Texas and Arkansas.
Mike has always shared his love of the outdoors with those around him, including serving as a past Cub and Boy Scout Master where his leadership helped to guide his son to receive the Eagle Scout Award.
